How to Become a Substitute Teacher

To serve as a substitute teacher, individuals must meet Illinois licensure requirements and complete the authorization process through Regional Office of Education (ROE) #1.  This packet includes detailed instructions, licensure information, fees, required forms, and contact information to help guide you through the process.  Click on the link below for further details.

How to Become a Substitute Paraprofessional (Teacher Aide)

Substitute paraprofessionals support students and teachers in the classroom, helping provide a positive and productive learning environment.

Interested individuals may qualify through several Illinois credentialing pathways, depending on their education and qualifications.

Steps to Get Started:

1. Review the qualifications. Illinois offers paraprofessional licensure and a short-term paraprofessional approval pathway.

2. Create an ELIS account. Visit ISBE's ELIS website.

3. Apply for the appropriate credential. Submit your application and any required transcripts or other supporting documents.

4. Complete district employment requirements. Additional background checks, health documentation, and onboarding requirements may apply before beginning work.
